The essence of Nichiren Buddhism is the “one essential phrase” - Nam Myoho Renge Kyo.
This is chanted rhythmically to enable your life to become one with the enlightened life of the Buddha. The Buddha is not a person, an object or a concept . Buddha is life. To attain Buddhahood is to become enlightened to the mysteries of birth, life and death. We all have the potential for Buddhahood.
Myoho Renge Kyo is both the title and the essence of the Lotus Sutra - the supreme sutra. Nichiren Daishonin - the true Buddha of the latter day of the law - revealed this as “Nam Myoho Renge Kyo”.
Nichiren declared that the people of this Earth would inevitably attain enlightenment through this practice of chanting.
Nam Myoho Renge Kyo encompasses everything.
One literal translation is......
Nam - to be in rhythm with - Myoho - the Mystic Law - Renge - acting through cause and effect - Kyo - everywhere.
The Mystic Law is that which orchestrates the Universe. It is not a theory or a concept - it is a law. The Supreme Law.
